Route through the cantabrian nature
On our Cantabrian Nature Route we hike along the coast and enjoy spectacular beaches and cliffs. It is a 150-kilometer hiking route on the edge of the Cantabrian Sea, on which we find imposing forests.
This route allows us to enjoy a very rich, variable and really incredible landscape where the panoramic view remains constant. We can visit places like the mythical Playa de las Catedrales or magical cities like Rinlo, the second oldest fishing guild in Spain. Fortresses like Fornelos, nature areas with special bird protection or ports like Nois, which used to be dedicated to whaling.
The route.
The Cantabrian Nature Route is divided into seven stages. It runs along the north coast of the province of Lugo and ends in the province of Coruña between O Vicedo and Ladrido.
Our route starts in Ribadeo, a bridge city between Asturias and Galicia, towards the monumental Playa de las Catedrales and leads through Rinlo, a charming fishing village. The second stage takes us to Foz, a typical summer vacation spot on the Cantabrian coast. From there we hike to Burela, a very important fishing port. In our fourth stage we will advance further through the north of the province of Lugo to San Cibrao. The fifth stage takes us to Viveiro, the largest mouth of the Cantabrian Sea, surrounded by natural landscapes of enormous importance such as O Souto da Retorta, the forest of giants. From Viveiro we hike on the seventh stage to O Vicedo.
During our final stage of this Cantabrian nature route, the sea will gain in importance in the Estaca de Bares region. We must not forget to take a break at the “best cliff in the world” on the Loiba cliffs, from which we can enjoy an impressive view of the Cantabrian coast. We will end our route in the city of Ladrido.
Difficulty.
The Galician Rías Altas are characterized by their robust orography. The route does not present much difficulty with an average of 20 kilometers, although we need to exercise some caution on the route closest to the sea, especially on the cliffs. On the other hand, we find areas with promenades and forests with very easy hiking trails. We also need to take the usual precautions in the sections where the route meets busy roads. Since we are in the northwestern corner of the peninsula, the climate is very favorable for hiking routes. Even in midsummer the temperatures are very mild.
