The Caminos de Santiago are pilgrimage routes that converge on the city of Santiago de Compostela, undoubtedly one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the world. These historic routes have profound religious and cultural significance.
The origin of the Caminos de Santiago is related to the tradition that holds that the remains of the apostle Saint James the Greater were brought to Galicia and buried in a place very close to what is now the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Since the Middle Ages, pilgrims have walked these routes as an act of devotion, penance, or spiritual quest.
Although the Camino’s origins are religious, today pilgrims follow these routes for a variety of reasons, from spiritual to cultural, sporting, and touristic.
