NORTHERN ROUTE – RÍAS ALTAS
This Rías Altas Northern Route is a route between borders, since we will visit the northernmost corner of the Iberian Peninsula, where the Atlantic Ocean and the Cantabrian Sea converge. We will also visit places just in the limit between the provinces of Coruña and Lugo.
A land of tranquility bathed by wild waters, with excellent beaches of fine sand and transparent waters, among which ancient treasures are hidden.
This Rías Altas Northern Route will also take us to more well-known places, some universally famous, such as the Best Bank of the World, an unavoidable photo spot, no matter how hard we resist. The views will make us fall in love.
Between the sea and the ocean.
A long and steep neck of land separates the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Combed by brave winds and beaten down by fierce waves, it gives us a beautiful panoramic view of the silhouette of the Galician coast, while our lungs fill with salt. A feeling of freedom in a natural environment where land and water converge in a wild way. We are in the northernmost point of Spain, and also on the highest cliffs of Continental Europe, a place of dizziness with the world at our feet.
Coastal towns of ancestral tradition.
This entire northern coast of Galicia is dotted with small fishing villages, almost remote places by land, but to which explorers from other civilizations arrived by sea since ancient times.
Currently, we will be struck by the picturesque architecture of its houses, typical of seaside towns, and adapted to the life of this area, as well as other buildings that testify the importance of the fish processing industry in the economy of the area.
Of course, we must not forget its wonderful gastronomy, based on fish and seafood.
A Land of Celtic Magic.
Celtic land par excellence, sister of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and Britain, this northern area preserves strong vestiges of a past full of myths and legends of this ancient culture. Testimony of the roots of this culture in the area, is the massive International Festival of Celtic World in Ortigueira, which has brought together thousands of people from all over the world since 1978 and which has hosted the most important figures of folk music.
San Andrés de Teixido
In this Rías Altas Northern Route we can also visit legendary places like this small sanctuary at the top of the cliffs, a must stop off for pilgrims. The saying goes “if you don’t go whilst alive, you must go after death”. There we can also walk among magical plants, such as the “love herbs” while we breathe in all the purity of the ocean and let the taste of salt invade us.
