RIAS BAIXAS ROUTE AND BOAT TRIP
Between Baiona and Fisterra you can discover paradise on earth, an extension of coastline cut out by the unique way in which the Atlantic Ocean enters Galicia: the Rías Baixas. Fine sand beaches and clear waters, green islands in the middle of the great blue, forests that look out to the sea, towns that combine the tradition of fishing villages with the spell of bustling summer resorts. And, of course, the fish, shellfish and wines with which this conjunction of fertile land, calm waters and a privileged climate have blessed this area.
The center of this area are the Rías de Arousa and Pontevedra, two sister estuaries that contain the best treasures of the sea.
The orchards of the sea.
One of the most characteristic pictures of the Rías Baixas are the huge tongues of blue water full of “bateas”. These platforms for the cultivation of bivalves are typical of the area, a way of farming that provides the most appreciated fruits of the sea.
Among these imposing structures you will sail along the Ría de Arousa, enjoying an unforgettable journey with mussels and local wine tasting.
The place to be in summer.
If there is an area where the pleasant microclimate of the Rías Baixas is accentuated, that is the península of O Grove. Many call it the Galician Caribbean. It is almost an island, just linked to the mainland by the isthmus of O Bao, a marsh that constitutes one of the main wetlands in Galicia. And if there is something better than its nice weather and wonderful landscape, it is the magnificent gastronomy, led by seafood. Therefore, O Grove is said to be the capital of seafood. It hosts the biggest festival for the exaltation of seafood, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest. The great development in recent decades of all this area has been decisive for its consolidation as a reference for beach tourism and nightlife. But its history was already intimately linked to that of travelers long before. The thermal waters of La Toja Island and its Casino still preserve the flavor of those vacations of relaxing days and sumptuous evenings of the 19th Century.
The land of wine.
Although the name of the Denomination of Origin for the wine in this area is Rías Baixas, the Albariño-type grape highlights its nomenclature over the oficial name. Albariño, fish and shellfish go hand in hand. And, if there is also a place where this Rias Baixas wine is more Albariño than anywhere else, that is Cambados, a stately town with an authentic atlantic taste.
Traditional architecture.
The coast that borders the Rías Baixas is full of villages and beaches, a succession of charming places that combine nature, modernity and tradition. Places that concentrate, in a small area, many of the most traditional architectural elements of Galicia.
